about

Class Chilopoda, or centipedes, represents one of the four
major myriapod lineages (Arthropoda; Myriapoda). They
are present on every continent except Antarctica and are an
important group of terrestrial predatory arthropods. There
are about 3300 species worldwide within five extant orders:
Scutigeromorpha, Lithobiomorpha, Craterostigmomorpha,
Geophilomorpha, and Scolopendromorpha. Several
morphological characters unite the members of Chilopoda,
including a single pair of antennae, three pairs of mouthparts,
a posterior genital opening (opisthogoneate), and 15
to 191 trunk-segments each bearing a single pair of walking
legs (Edgecombe and Giribet, 2007; Lewis, 1981). However,
the most obvious, and infamous, shared derived character of
centipedes is the modification of the first pair of walking
legs into venomous appendages often called poison claws,
forcipules, toxicognaths, or maxillipeds.
